Sweatin’ On: LA Style
Last month my friend Catherine and I went on another workout vacation, but instead of NYC we set our sights on LA. I had only been to LA once, and I was intrigued by everything I’ve read about their fitness scene. And I love that city, even though I don’t understand it. I’m in awe of palm trees, I giggle when we drive through Beverly Hills (it’s so strange and beautiful!), and I get giddy thinking about all the nutty celebrities that we might see. We had a packed weekend of classes, shopping, eating, and enjoying the sunshine. The trip became epic when we took a class with Richard Simmons at his Slimmons studio on Saturday morning. After class I looked at Catherine and said, ” That was surreal and beautiful”, and it was. I’ll leave it at that.
I had a couple months to plan outfits for this trip and think about what LA fitness style means to me. I knew we would be sweating, stretching, and going straight from class to shops, which meant I had to pack outfits that would work for the whole day. I had it in my head that Californians wore way more color that those of us on the East Coast (not really true), so I packed my brightest items. I also wanted to wear something truly memorable to Slimmons- something 80s inspired, but not costume-y (no need to be disrespectful to the Slimmons regulars). I most definitely overpacked, but below are a few standout items from the trip.
Purusha’s Sea of Cortez leggings were perfect for Richard’s class. They’re sparkly, fitted, easy to move in (cause we shook it hard), and made me feel like a mermaid. Each Purusha piece is handmade, so plan on a few weeks between when you order and when your products arrive, or pick them up at ABx during your next trip to Michigan. Hayley, the lovely face behind the brand, kept me posted on the other products I ordered (the Rise Hoodie and the Breathe Tank, which were very much worth the wait), and put a sweet handwritten note in the package. I topped off my outfit with the Lorna Jane Refresh Jacket and an old ruffled version of the Lululemon Cool Racerback Tank. The LJ jacket was a souvenir from our visit to Physique 57 in Beverly Hills. I debated buying it, but I’m so glad I did because it’s a killer piece. The bright pink lining shines through the mesh outer layer, which gives you pops of color as you move. My trusty Reeboks (ain’t nothin’ better!) and heart-shaped sunglasses completed the look.
Before Slimmons we hit up a class at Soul Cycle in West Hollywood. Since I am really feeling Lorna Jane right now I busted out my new Floral Mania crops (out of stock- sorry!) and Motion Jacket. High collared jackets rock my world, and the bright blue color on this one is terrific.
It does not get better than this! Richard, you are delightful.
